In response to "what else could it be?" I would contend that it is a chicken egg with the potential to become a chicken. If I don't decide to use it to sustain myself or other chickens first that is. I would also suggest that a chicken egg is not a chicken until it starts to take on chicken like qualities like a beak, head, legs, nervous system. At that point a person is becoming as well.
All matter has the potential to become energy but until it does it is just matter. Lamenting lost potential serves no purpose.
Would you consider a fertilized chicken egg a chicken? Certainly it has the potential to become a chicken but I wouldn't say it IS a chicken.
A slave is a sentient being so it's not exactly the same thing. An embryo has no nerve tissue and no nervous system (at least during the stages being discussed here). I do not wish to be insensitive to your opinion but perhaps we should stick to the topic at hand.
I can see you have thought out your position and I solute your consistency and convictions, sir. My opinion varies from yours but I respect your right to it and I thank you for taking the time to respond.
I'm just curious here and I hope I don't offend but are you suggesting that fertility treatments be outlawed? These are not abortions the article is talking about.
When fertility treatments are done, they take more eggs than they need for the procedure to ensure a healthy selection is available. These extra fertilized eggs can be frozen for a limited amount of time before they are considered non-viable and must be disposed of. Fertility treatments offer many people a chance at having a child were otherwise there would be none. At the point in time where the embryos become medical waste, the question becomes do we use the material or do we throw it away. There is no 3rd option. If you are against using the material you are in effect in favor of throwing it in the trash.
That is the point I was trying to make. People run around in a residential area with their head up their posterior with no regard for children or animals that often happen into the roadway in these areas specifically. My money is on cell phone radio or speeding or all of these combined. I find it hard to believe that, if someone was abiding by the speed limit and paying attention, they would have trouble stopping before striking anything in an area such as this.
So did you pay for the damage to the SUV? Clearly we need child leash laws.
