Here's my theory...In the episode "No tomorrow" Ted bumps into a girl briefly and says excuse me or sorry..in this episode he get the yellow umbrella and he also mentions the mother was there that night,. In another episode, I can't remember which one, when Ted is first trying to court Stella, Stella tells him she hasn't been out except one St. Patricks day at a bar with some friends. Maybe the girl Ted bumped into was one of Stella's friends that she sets Ted up with later.

Just a thought.
