I can remember correcting my 7th grade "science" teacher's pronunciation of the word "fungi" [she pronounced it with a hard "g" like bag, instead of the soft "g" like giant.] My father had been an English teacher before going to work with an educational publishing company, so I was always being corrected. I didn't mind and learned a lot from him. She accepted my correction without incident and thanked me. This very nice lady was going off to earn her master's degree at the end of the year, so I hope I helped her, LOL! This was a public school back in the mid 60's. We had some great, dedicated teachers back then. Their focus was on teaching the subject, getting the students involved and participating. They were not in the business of socializing us. Kids have always been pretty good at socializing themselves, especially if the have strong parental guidance at home.
