If you're the smartest person in the room you're in the wrong room.

Alright I have slightly lead us astray from the original topic - Greedy restaurant owners. Darden Restaurants operates 1,800 casual restaurants (Olive Garden, Mararoni Grill) across the country. It only has a profit margin of 5.7%. Again I ask, how is that greedy? They have money to invest in surveying for the best spot to open a new restaurant and they are still only at 5.7% profit margin. The average long term return on US stocks is 6.5%.

So how is that greedy? They don't make much money. Yes they have to build into their business plan tips for employees because otherwise they would go out of business and neither one (the owner and the waiter) would have a job. Then both people lose. The waiter doesn't get paid much as they owner because the owner has much more responsibility than the waiter. That's the way thing should and do work.

Read the link this time before you assume you know what it is talking about.

"Their prices are already much too high"
"they should either increase prices or learn how to manage."

So really they should just learn how to manage since their prices are already too high. The entire restaurant industry, all the hundreds of thousands of restaurants out there, should learn how to manage.

It sounds so easy when you put it like that! You should open a restaurant.

you can't just throw out crap and expect it to stick. Just because you say something doesn't make it true or worthwhile. Opinions are only as good as the FACTS that back them.

According to the 2010 OPerations Report by the National Restaurant Association, full service restaurants have a profit margin, depending on check amount, ranged from 1.8% to 3.5%. That is terrible.

They can't afford to pay their employees anything better than what they do. If they raised the cost of their goods to make up for increase in wages they'd go out of business because people would stop visiting. Have you ever talked to someone who tried to open up a restaurant? It's incredibly difficult.

So how is that greedy? Where is the greed at 3.5% ROR?

Profit margins for retail is pretty low. And so is for restaurants. If two spaces are available for rent and one lease is less because he used less expensive labor, where do you think the business would go?

You speak to "greed" but you have not backed up where this greed is found. I'm not talking Wall Street. That's a different subject. I'm talking "Main Street." What are the profit margins for the industries? Just because a company makes huge profits does not make them greedy. OIl companies have under a 10% profit margins which is less than a good return on stock. They just make so much damn money it seems they are greedy but it costs a lot to run a huge business. They need to make money so they can invest it and grow.

Is it possible for union memebers to be greedy? To be asked to be paid for more than they are worth?

So I work in construction management and we bid projects. we sum up all the costs it is to build the project and part of these costs are, naturally, wages of those working. So if a union says all carpenters get paid $80/hour (which is not far off from what many are paid because of unions) then we must estimate how many hours carpenters will be working and times that by $80 to get the labor cost. Now if we are able to find as good of help at $60/hour and legally allowed to hire the help, well then we save $20 per man hour worked. So yes lowering wages lowers the cost of goods.

And let's say we're building an office building. WEll the owner now saves money on the construction of the buildling because labor was cheaper so he does not have to charge his tenants as much to lease it out because it didn't cost him as much to build it. Well if the leasers don't have to pay as much in rent, well then they don't have to charge as much for their product because rent isn't so high. And boom! Everyone wins. Well except for you because you remain ignorant.

If wages drop, so does the price of goods. Labor is often the biggest cost for producing goods.

That or corporate taxes.

Nice slippery slope attempt.

The rights of the individual to do with as they please what they have earned. That created by the individual does not belong to the collective. Part of this does belief does include the right to accumulate material wealth. I'm not rich nor do I care to be. But I wish to be able to keep what I have earned.

Just as you can not explain all the reasons behind all your beliefs in short post online, I am unable to do the same.

But the core belief behind which I believe is my life and my survival does not belong to the collective. I am an individual living in a world with individuals. I do not fear/oppose groups, collaboration, or the power of team work. But that which I create (whether with people or by my own labor) belongs to those who created it, not to the collective.

Just as I will not ask you to live for me, I wish to not live for you.

You may call that refusing to live for someone else selfish, but I believe it is less selfish than asking someone to live for you.
