I attended college with photographer Reid Blackburn who was killed on the mountain. It was an amazing several days following the blast, not just the day of. The images of devastation were unbelievable, the stories from survivors numbing, reports of the dead were heartbreaking, and scenes from ash-covered Spokane surrealistic.

I still carry face masks in the car glove compartment.

Hope she's well edited for this book. They gave her a pass on the last HP books. However, she does know how to hook readers and create empathetic characters.

Apparently the hazing included anal penetration. That's why it's being investigated as sexual assault. This was mentioned once (possibly in "The Oregonian") but has not been clarified since.

Marriage is a legal matter -- property and inheritance rights. Heterosexuals can have any old ceremony they want to call a marriage, but without the proper legal document they are not married under the law. A single, affordable government document clears up spousal rights to joint property, access to medical records, beneficiary designations, etc.

As for traditional marriage -- historically fathers sold their daughters to the man with the most goats (or whatever their culture valued), or bribed men to marry their daughters by offering farmland or a dowry. Sovereignties solidified coalitions with marriages. These were property and political arrangements. Note that the women had little to say in these arrangements, since they were part of the property covered under the marriage contract.

The arguments used against homosexual marriage are eerily similar to those used against inter-racial marriages. I suspect alcohol, drugs, abuse, and financial problems have more to do with disrupting the institution of marriage than the gender or race of the individuals.

Apparently "organizations under investigation" are guilty until proven innocent under Komen for the Cure's policies?
