Instead of histrionically criticizing the Confederate battle flag (not the most pressing issue since about the last 140 years) the libs should just go with a consistent "We really enjoy desecrating non-3rd-world non-jihadist flags" messaging
Historically it's a novel problem, but there is an argument to be made that the whitehouse.gov www site is not meant to be a subsidized campaign blog. While cleansing it of politicized wording may be practically impossible, any POTUS who uses it for mere grandstanding and publicity, Ingsoc-style, is clearly violating the American self-conceit of permanent institutions of the republic administered by transitory citizen officials.
But probably now every .gov site is this bad.
Gee, don't you have the keen collectivist's view of everything. Buy or borrow a dictionary and then look up "presupposition"
"websites and magazines do not exist solely to give writers a vehicle to speak to readers... If they are not run to make money, but are mission-driven instead...they exist to give shape and form and heft to a view of the world its writers and editors share" -- all pretty self-evident stuff amounting to a hill of verbiage to block an argument nobody's making. Getting fired by National Review or Commentary or the Daily Beast or the Daily Kos is no big deal in 2012, and Lowry certainly didn't belabor the point. The disappointment and backlash is driven not by the existence of ex cathedra denunciation but rather its overall shabbiness and sentimental-theatrical tenor. That is the MO of the shrill leftist and smug city liberal. Your tacked-on aspersions toward Derbyshire's inner motivation are similarly self-abasing, John.
The emphasis on IQ tests is in many respects overdone, since anyone who is familiar with the field of psychometrics and cognitive measurement knows we are not many decades removed from its infancy and authorities up to and including such experts as Steven Pinker will also make a point of the brain's complexity to distinguish between reflex and developed aspects. Speaking of IQ requires some caution and humility--however I don't see the point in proscribing it wholesale.
Race is different, though I wonder whether we speak the same language. Certainly doctors and clinical researchers accept the existence of race as a heuristic category, and that a descendant of pre-Columbian Mayan Indians may be less at risk of Tay-Sachs disease, or that Laotians and Caribbean blacks don't have a comparable incidence of sickle-cell anemia. I like to believe I'm in favor of constructive analogy over mere lawyerly squabbling but seriously doubt that anybody ought to be cast to the fringe for acknowledging the root factor of diffuse races. Nobody can change his or hers so why abdicate the responsibility to abstract from & study it?
Frankly I wish she would just ignore their damn movie of the week. A private citizen can be excused for taking media nattering personally, whereas she has been a national figure almost 4 years.
Fools, don't you realize that he set this up all along to outwit the media? This is what happens when someone is the most conservative conservative ever to live, the Establishment comes along and tries to sabotage him.
It's little known but Gingrich was meeting with the college of cardinals a decade ago. They said to him, "You know, we're thinking, put you in there instead of this Ratzinger joker. You're clearly the conservative candidate." He declined, explaining how that would only play into the Establishment's hands.
Though I respect your effort to reason out those assertions with him/her/it, there is no point. Only one result counts this week and the online textrovert cheerleaders would be setting themselves up for imminent shame were they posting under their real names. The "Gingrich hates Reagan" ads made no sense at all, even to anyone who casually followed 1990s politics, but Romney isn't clever enough to campaign on real issues. Meanwhile the increasingly rabid and demented Gingrich shock troops are now bashing Mitch Daniels. Statements like "Obama and Gingrich are equivalent" are mere noise and not worth evaluating.
Annoy Paul Ryan, annoy Tom Coburn, annoy Bob McDonnell, probably annoy Jim DeMint, etc., vote Newt. Primaries are held for petty therapeutic gratification after all.
