Do you even understand that this will run on MOBILE DEVICES? The whole OS. It's not a skimpy Android or Apple mobile OS. That's not an improvement? It's the main reason they're releasing it. Your ignorance is showing.

I think they're trying to meet Apple's strengths in the middle. Apple products are over priced and over simplified so gramma can use it first try. I'm sure there will still be a way to get under the hood, but giving ALL users the benefit of the doubt has been part of Microsoft's downfall in the past. If you assume everyone knows how a computer works, the masses cry "it isn't intuitive!"

There are a few minor perks and upgrades but it won't be major. That's one reason the upgrade will only be about $40.

When a company like Microsoft does something like this they're putting their neck on the line. Advertisers, partners, customers, they will all take note of this decision and either judge it a trend (which makes it very powerful), or condemn it, which also has repercussions. They're saying we want to do business with people that think progressively, like us. If you disagree, feel free to take your business elsewhere.
