The article list his job as cook. Regardless of his title - anytime somebody puts themselves in harms way for the welfare of another - they are HERO in my book.

oops! Maybe I should have read the entire listing. I have a tendency to loose interest in Craigslist postings when they are 100k outside of my budget. ;)
Although 15 knots could be a good thing - for all police vehicles. Imagine how safe you'd feel if you knew the police vehicle in your rear view mirror maxed out at 15 knots......

What!?!
If you saw an officer being attacked by a wild animal you wouldn't try any means at your disposal to stop the attack? Are you suggesting that they should have waited until they had been able to tranquilize Instead. - I don't think that's what you mean, at least i hope not.
I wouldn't go as far as to say "the humans did the right thing" - but doesn't sound like they any other options. I hope the eleven who had put themselves in harms way and and were hurt because of it make full recoveries.

While Pierce County may report themselves as "Self Insured", the reality is - if it can't afford to replace necessary equipment after a loss - that's known as under-insured/uninsured - or just plain stupid.

Portland Coast Guard is selling their self righting USCG boat - $115,000 on Craigslist. That has to be far less expensive then trying to salvage this one. http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/boa/2501926592.... Maybe the PD needs to learn to shop around like the rest of us...
