I would be much happier if they left the Taco Bell alone and put the fire station at some abandoned site in the area. Cheesy Gordita Crunches are so tasty.

Maybe build the fire station on 2nd Ave once it's closed?

An underpass is the way to go. To answer peope's questions, overpasses are incredibly difficult to make handicap accessible. As a general rule you need a foot of length per inch of rise if you expect someone to safely get a wheelchair up it. So, figure you need 20 feet to get over semis and the such. This means a 240 foot ramp on each side of an overpass.

Digging a couple feet down for an underpass is easier and much less obtrusive.

Neat idea. If you have to have a building there why not make it dual purpose.

However, building 5 feet of stairs to get onto the stage sounds like they are planning on making a public structure that isn't handicap accessible. 5 feet of stairs would mean about 60 feet of ramps to make the stage accessible. Maybe close 2nd Ave to make this possible?

What a farce.

I have a lot of respect for what Jason Hellendrung and Sasaki have been able to accomplish for our city. They have brought about some cool ideas that would be a very positive change in Cedar Rapids. However, for him to be at this event as a representative of the medical district is a joke. Sasaki works for the city and is making a hefty amount from the city as out-of-town consultants.

The fact that Sasaki was running the show indicates that the city has already made up their mind on all of this. Sasaki's purpose for some time has been to push the council's agenda on the people of Cedar Rapids. I love some of the ideas, but closing 2nd Ave for a business that won't even pay property tax is stupid.

TwoCats, I disagree with you that this has anything to do with the "two unfunded wars that helped create this deficit in the first place".

I'd argue that spending money on defense does more to create American jobs than giving money to unemployed people. The defense sector employs millions of Americans and is one of the few true remaining American industries.

That looks remarkably like the graffiti that showed up at the Kernels stadium. Some "gang" in town or just some teenagers with crappy parents?
