CSGuy, you are absolutely right! More of today's kids need to understand that for every action, there are consequences; for every right claimed, there are corresponding responsibilities.
A search on Wikipedia for intensive poultry farming should give you an article that lists some of the issues.
I fail to see why someone else raising the temperature on a water heater negates any of Albers' culpability. Did he really prepare the baby's bath without checking the temperature? BUT, my biggest question here is what judge approved this sentence? Gazette, how do you report a story like this and not report the name of the judge?
In too many cases, I wish the definition of 'cruel and unusual' was measured against the brutality of the murder(s) these animals commit, rather than how much suffering they incur when the death penalty is administered.
This has been part of an on-going investigative report in the Des Moines Register, beginning with two articles on July 11th. A search for 'mobile homes' on the Register site will take you to a list which includes the articles which are part of their report.
Since this story first broke in the Gazette, I had followed the story in awe of how selfless Captain Wisniewski was--over and over. Although all the praise does not reduce his family's grief right now, I pray that as you come through that grief you will remember him and take pride in your part of forming such a real-life hero.
Buzz and whysoangry, I join with you in prayers for the people affected by this event. I am glad that the water spread out before hitting Hopkinton and Monticello, but the spread over farmlands means irretrievable crop damage for many farmers. My prayers go out for those farmers, too.
As a former female correctional officer in a state prison, I understand that most people feel as you do. Most inmates are not looking for time in solitary or a longer sentence, thus they do not assault staff. There are the mentally ill and violent inmates who are unpredictable, and they attack regardless of sex. This article does not say if this inmate had previously assaulted staff, but someone who has a 10-year sentence from 6 years ago and is in Fort Madison is a pretty good indication that this inmate is a problem inmate. An inmate that followed rules would have most likely discharged this sentence a year ago.
