Give me Murphy, a kid who comes to the ballpark ready to work and perform every day for 600 abs instead of a malcontent like Sheffield, who needs to hear his coaches, general managers and owners tell them how much they love him before he gets his head in the game. Add in the fact that he has no defensive position anymore and he had a lousy spring and 2008, I don't see this as low risk, high reward - I see this as a waste of time and/or inviting trouble.
I was thinking over/under how many months Sheffield lasts. I give him until May 30 before he pouts his way to free agency. Which means at the end of the day all you've accomplished in a signing like this is a waste of everyone's time and patience and someone for the media to hound when they're not bugging A-Rod.
Did you see Sheff play first for the Yankees back in 2006? They would have been better with Giambi out there.
I'm generally pretty open minded about roster moves, but I just don't see how this makes sense. Unless Jerry and the FO are really down on Church. They've talked up Murphy too much at this point to bury him and I really don't see Sheff just coming in as a pinch hitter. Yeah, you can cut him if he makes too much noise, but why put yourself through that and eat Marlon's contract in the process? Just cut Marlon and either promote Evans for the bench or take on a guy like Cattalano who's more suited to be a utility guy.
I keep trying to figure out what the plan is here. Maybe if I hear it, and it makes sense, I can deal with having to root for this guy. But I can't imagine he's picking the Mets over the Phillies just so he can ride the pine in Queens. He's going to take playing time from someone and I swear, if the end result of this transaction is Murphy starting the season in Buffalo I don't think I'm ever going to trust a single word spouted by the Wilpons/Minaya ever again.
