I liked the interview too, Mujica's always like that, he speaks his mind, period. Jejeje, I love it when I encounter ME-O and Karen at El Portal La Dehesa, such a blatant double standard. I'm not asking him to live in La Cisterna, but isn't La Dehesa supposed to be the incarnation of evil in Santiago de Chile? BTW, I used to live in La Dehesa and my parents still do :-)...lots of Concertacionistas live over ther, especially DC (like UDI folks , they tend to have a gazillion of kids, so they need big houses), and it is a nice neighborhood

I can't stand him either, he's so arrogant, and don't even get me started with his cousin (Rafael Gumucio)

Argentines secretly envy Uruguay's stability and civility. Of course, plenty of Argentines think of Uruguay as another province. The thing is Arg-Uru relations have become pretty strained due to the pulpmill. There's a pending resolution to a lawsuit filed in La Haya. So, every time an Uruguayan politician makes a statement about Argentina it's going to get tons of attention. Also, there's a precedent. When Battle was president he started ranting, thinking the cameras were off, about how Argentines were all "chorros, corruptos" etc, etc . He had to come over to personally apologize to Duhalde, he even cried...it was such a bizarre episode. Of course nobody bought his apology, mainly because it's known that Uruguayans really think Argentines, for the most part, are chorros y corruptos. I think it's being interpreted as Mujica speaking his mind and telling it like he sees it, which he does pretty much always. What's interesting is that Crista&Néstor were rooting for him to win the Frente Amplio primaries.

That interview has caused a quite the quilombo on both sides of el Río de la Plata. It is very likely that Mujica will win the election, although I would have prefered Astori as the Frente candidate much better. What's interesting in Uruguay is the absolute lack of renewal of its political class, the youngest politician must be 60 years old. About ME-O he really shot himself in the foot, the quote doesn't surprise me much. He's always been prone to those statements about him having grown up in Europe and bla bla bla. His presidential race should be over, however I'm not so sure about his political career. All he needs to do is something cute or endearing in order to win the graces of the Chilean people. The best example is Velasco. I thinks it's great his little daughter survived the drowning accident, really, I'm very happy for him and his wife, it must have been an undescribable ordeal. However, prior to that he was the most unpopular member of the government, his poll numbers were lower than Toledo's before leaving Peru's presidency. All of a sudden his 2 year old almost dies and he becomes the most lovable man Chile's ever had.

I lived in Bello Monte/Colinas de Bello Monte for 3 years, while I was a student at la Católica, great memories!!!

We had a great view and we could also see the estadio universitario's scoreboard from our balcony...

From the first minute of Bowling for Columbine you can tell MM's just wants to show his on the right side, and has no interest in promoting an intelligent discussion about the guns issue. . The first thing he shows ia the number of homicides (absolute figures). Well of course there's going to be more homicides in the US than in Switzerland. If he really wanted to be serious he would have used percentages, you know, to take into account population diffferences. But no, he just wants you to be shocked by the absolute number.

I'm not a Charlton Heston fan, although back in the 60's he was one of the first celebrities to march along Dr. King. I don't know what happened to him and why did he become such an adamant defender of the NRA, but I thought it was in poor taste to ambush a senile old man with Alzheimer the way Moore did.

Hey, even Erich Honecker was granted asylum for humanitary reasons in Chile...

100% agree + he's terrible with a camera. All of his documentaries have lousy lightning, extremely poor framing, etc, etc. You can actually make that's beautifully shot and that means something. I don't subscribe at all with Riviera&Breton manifesto about art only having value if it is political. Two examples: Frederik Wiseman's entire body of work and Spike Lee's Four Little Girls

Michael Moore's only merit is making documentaries more popular, other than that he's reduced them to it's lowest level. MM really gets on my nerves, because I love film in general, and documentaries in particular.

Well, here's an old joke I heard when I was a kid, very very un-PC: ¿qué sale de la mezcla entre un argentino y un portugués? un conserje q se cree el dueño del edificio

Well, to begin with, barrio is the same as urbanización. Here in Argentina, la Lagunita, or el Country, would be barrios. A muchacha de barrio is basically a good girl, you know "una muchacha de su casa", a goodie two shoes. It is a positive description if you like good/well behaved girls

I've always had the feeling that Venezuelans would have a hard time if Brazil and Venezuela were to meet at a World Cup :). I cheer for Italia, always had, and I can tell you every time Italia played Brazil in a World Cup, Venezuelans without Italian background would come to our club (Casa d'Italia de Maracay) to throw eggs at us and call us names.

I'm not doubting, at all, your anecdote about Chileans partying with the Brazilians, but when was that? Last time Chile went to a World Cup was France 1998 and I remember very very long faces when Chile lost to Brazil on the second round, at least in Santiago. Yet, I would do the same, Brazilians definitely know how to party and have a good time!

Funny joke, however, we get along just fine these days. You know, Chileans love coming to Buenos Aires and Argentines, since local beaches are too expensive again, are flooding again Chilean beaches during the summer. Furthermore, Argentines are a little jealous of Chile's success, which in turn has made Chileans become more arrogant.

Buenos Aires it is definitely a place to visit. You'll like it a lot. Let me know when/if you come over, so we show around, etc.

I didn't know about the Argentinosaurus. You always learn something new. If a larger one comes out it could be called Braziliansaurus, as well, you know, since they are "o pais mais grande do mundo"
