Loved Dave Grohl's acceptance speech. (Paraphrasing) "No computers...learn to sing...learn an instrument...doesn't have to be perfect, just from the heart and the head." Grohl and the Foos are a dying breed...just like the McCartney gang at the end of the show!
Aaah, ONJ! I remember seeing this movie in the early days of HBO and, even though I had seen her in Grease, I felt, for the first time, that funny tingly feeling young guys get when they develop their first crush.
Glad I'm not the only one, Gary. I was aware of the story before hearing her sing but I first heard her on the radio. I caught it in the middle of the song and figured it was a recap of the previous night's American Idol (which I do not watch). I thought, "Wow, she has a nice voice," but was certainly not swept away by it. My wife claims it's the most beautiful voice she's ever heard. To which I responsibly respond, "Yes, dear, it sure is lovely."
And Biden said paying taxes is patriotic. So at a time of "national crisis" why does The One put so little emphasis on appointing true patriots to his cabinet?
Since the War on Poverty, as Senator Reid might say, has failed, perhaps we should abandon the current war and mount a surge on a new front. The poverty of character, common sense, or rugged individualism would all be good options. The lack of all three contribute to a culture that elevates the likes of Madoff and The One to positions of power and influence.
Actually, Doug, we use adult stem cell research not necessarily as an argument against ESCR but to recommend it (as research is proving) as a superior alternative. The great thing about the adult stem cell recommendation is that the self-proclaimed pro-science left will hear nothing of it. This proves the issue is more political than scientific for them. As you've so deftly illustrated, if they were truly pro-science they'd be open to all research but, indeed, they pick and choose as it benefits them politically. Nothing new under the sun.
Perfect example: "It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion...It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda - and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology." He's using this for ESCR but what better argument against the left's "Green" agenda.
Ah yes, I had the Billy Ayers action set complete with Fascist Pig-Buster Bombs, Healing Crystal Earrings, and Saul Alinsky Book of Spells. Gosh, if I'd kept the original packaging that stuff would be worth dollars.
Must admit, I haven't seen this much of 1776. Knew of both the original and the revival but, sad to say, I assumed it would be a typically cynical, leftist representation of the Continental Congress. You know, a bunch of rich, white, hypocritical aristocrats assuring freedom for themselves and oppression for African- and Native-Americans. Sooo delighted to learn of its deference for the founding fathers. This WILL become required viewing for my kids and a new family July 4th tradition.
Just these few scenes blow away the left's usual mischaracterizations of the founders. Yes they were all white men but, interestingly, they were the very European styled, well-educated, upper crust, dare I say "elitists," the left so wants us all to be. In fact there were all types in that room. As great an example of "diversity" as 18th century politics could have produced.
Sadly, for the left, I suppose the founders' faith, if not merely belief, in God is the vinegar that overcomes the pungency of that reality.
The good thing is that Ms. Garofolo could only get a guest stint on MSNBC so only a few dozen people even saw it. And hopefully all of them realize that a confessed "self-loathing narcissist" is the last person worth trusting for an informed opinion on the mental health of an entire segment of the population with which she obviously has no regular contact.
Incidentally, I suppose she does have some street cred when it comes to understanding "people of color". Looking at all that ink she appears to be a person of many lovely colors.
