I don't think "Man Vs Machines" concept is no more scary. Because It's always interesting. We just don't want to see to many movies or tv shows talking about it at the same time. The fight between man and his own artificial creation is still a good idea, as well as the need to survive and keep or humanity. And, to my opinion, It's also a question of "design". If the machine looks scary and if its acts are terrifying (the more they aren't human, the more they're scary), it still works. Just take a look to the Frankenstein's creature. It's still frightening when we don't know what's going to happen, because the creature is carrying death...Another clue : real machines don't understand the basic concept of death, but we, humans, do.
