I believe a ransom was paid. Probably directly by friends or relatives of the hostages but maybe indirectly by government.

Thank goodness. The last two commissioners were disasters. Elliot did nothing to improve the situation. However a commissioner from inside the force may not be a good idea. He may have bias for the RCMP and not place the peoples' interests in priority.

No one engages in fear-mongering like a right-winger. Right winger are far more protectionists.
We don't have to close markets. We can have sovereignty and still trade. But our own sovereignty and security comes first.
