A great actor with lousy politics.

The only problem I have with this choice is that he's only #48 on the list. I have never seen a movie where Claude Rains gave a bad performance.

I'd also suggest The Informer (1935). A retelling of the story of Judas, it's the first Oscar won by John Ford. Also, if I remember right, Victor McLacglen also won an Oscar for playing the lead.

I notice that "Going My Way" is on the list, but not "The Bells of St. Mary's" (or, at least, I don't see it).

Both movies feature the same priest character played by Bing Crosby, and both are quite definitely Catholic in character.

It's true that most remakes suck. However, there are a couple of other exceptions. The Maltese Falcon with Bogart was a remake. Also, The Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars are great movies--maybe not as great as the Kurosawa originals, but still great nonetheless.

“The way to do a big-budget film these days is to take stories that everyone in the world knows and take them in a new direction,” Roth told us. “But no one’s come up with a fresh way to do a holiday movie, so we’re all doing it with other kinds of stories.” (Roth is doing just that with “Snow White” and “The Wizard of Oz.”)

Wait, someone is remaking Snow White and The Wizard of Oz???!!!

Ugh.

Shame about The Tourist. I'd been interested in seeing it after learning that it was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who did The Lives of Others. Now, I think I'll give it a pass.

Brilliant movie. It not only shows how oppressive Communism really was, but it's also an ingenious thriller. I was on the edge of my seat from the moment Dreyman decided to write his article criticizing the East German regime.
