That said, I wouldn't give Raimi that much credit. He's a smart writer/director, but he gets his kicks foremost from grossing out and scaring folks.

That said, if the movie is the vision of the director, then show it. Make it so that adults can see it -- because this is clearly a work for adults -- and let that be that.
The problem of course isn't the rating, but the marketing. An NC-17 rating means theaters won't show it since it won't generate the amount of money per showing than giving another screen to G-Force would.

His problem on Superman Returns was his inability to detach his movie from the Donner/Salkind series. Instead of it being a true reboot, it was a half-hearted attempt to keep something going that had run its course. Instead of giving us Darkseid, Doomsday or anything else intriguing, he went back to Luthor and his land grabs. And then shoved emotion where it wasn't needed by giving us Superkid.
