I was thinking the same thing when reading the article above. If you read further though, it states that, "An examination of neural responses in the auditory cortexes showed normal levels in the rats who were treated with the combination of stimulation and sound, indicating the tinnitus had disappeared". It is probably a similar response in human subjects who can tell the scientists of what they are experiencing.
