I'm always astounded by what Americans think about Mexico, as evidenced in so many of the comments above. Most of American's ideas come Hollywood films that portray Mexico negatively, or from the newspapers which do the same. I just came back from spending a month in Queretaro, about three hours north of Mexico City. Very few gringo tourists there (like myself). Gorgeous city, very polite people, safe, very family oriented, culture up the kazoo, booming economy. Any American who visited there (or just about anywhere outside the border towns) would have to reconcile Mexico's reality with his Hollywood-formed, media-twisted misconceptions. Viva Mexico.
