I think if they got the right director behind it, the movie has potential to be amazing. I guess it's better that they shelve it for now than push something out there that's not any good.

Here's the thing about all those people saying "It's a movie about giant robots based on a cartoon, what do you expect?" If you expect mediocrity, mediocrity is what you're going to get. It doesn't matter that the subject matter is fantastical, you can still treat it seriously and with respect. You don't have to "turn your brain off" because it's a summer action movie.

What if Christopher Nolan had taken the Michael Bay route? "What do you expect, it's a movie about a guy that dresses up like a Bat and fights crime? It's based on a 60 year old comic book! I just want a popcorn Batman movie where I can watch stuff blow up!" Thank goodness he decided to craft the best story and characters that he could, regardless of how imaginary or fantastic the subject matter.

There can still be incredible action movies that have engaging narratives with character development, but when we start accepting crap, crap is what we'll get.
