The moderator actually helps sustain the chain reaction by slowing fast neutrons to a level capable of causing another U-235 fission (thermal neutrons).

Scammed implies the control rods are all inserted. That shuts down the chain reaction.

The radioactivity would mainly be due to various particles (e.g. cesium and iodine isotopes) resulting from the fission process.

These reactors use plain old water (light water) for the coolant / moderator. Given that protium accounts for some 99.9% of all hydrogen, that would be the make up of the gas produced from the zirconium / water reactions.
