I would feel sorry for Sorkin, except he puts himself in rare territory: he is beneath contempt.

Guns in the hands of responsible citizens are no threat to anyone except miscreants of one stripe or another. Gun control efforts, by their very nature, have little or no influence on those who are inclined to misuse weapons.
At 18, our sons and daughters can and do enter the military, where many of them bear arms with distinction. It is foolish to imagine they return home on leave and turn into irresponsible and dangerous parties when they don civilian clothing. I raised my children to be adults at 18, trustworthy to vote and handle guns. I can't speak to the children of others, but a blanket condemnation of people based on age is at least as ignorant as racism.

There is no gun show loophole. Licensed sellers have to check backgrounds no matter where they sell. Private parties do not.
Prior to 1968, no background checks were needed for any purchaser under any circumstances. At that time, we were reasonable enough to believe that, if felons were violating the law by obtaining firearms, it was the felons we should hold responsible. We now are plagued with fools who believe the reverse is the case: that honest sellers must be responsible to prevent felons from purchasing weapons.
I hate to break it to naive people reading this, but felons can generally be relied on to violate laws.
Let's start throwing away the key for felons found with a firearm, whether they use to it commit a crime or merely own it.
Of course, we might go the opposite direction and, since our liberal/progressive faction generally argues for restoring the voting rights of felons, just insist that felons regain their right to arms at the same time. At least it would have the virtue of consistency. But liberal/progressive types aren't big on consistency either.
