"At last the three companions turned away, and never again looking back they rode slowly homewards; and they spoke no word to one another until they came back to the Shire, but each had great comfort in his friends on the long grey road."

We're all right there with you, is what I'm trying to say. At least we're all sad together.

Also, yes, I do keep The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings within reaching distance at all times.

I posted this quote in the Link Roundup comments, but it says everything I want to say and I'm terribly unoriginal, so, here it goes again:

"Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-Earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil."

I'm really going to miss these comments and this is the only website in the world I can say that about. I didn't post much but every time I did you all made me feel really good about my bad jokes. You're all great and in five years I'm sure Toast alumni, contributors and commenters will have taken over the world.

This quote has been knocking around in my head since the closure was announced. It seems to about sum things up. Its going to take me MONTHS to break the habit of coming here for new posts every day.

Thank you. I have think the EU will do everything it can to protect EU migrants living in the UK - they hold all the chips in terms of bargaining. I don't know if that's a comfort or not.

That's awful. I hope things work out for you, I really do. If you're in Scotland, I believe Nicola Sturgeon has pledged to stand by EU migrants, so maybe that's a glimmer of hope? If you need to talk my email is t dot wagstaff at hotmail dot co dot uk.

This will wreak havoc on humanities funding and cuts the UK off from the larger European community of academics. At this point I feel like my only hope is to move up the time table for when I do my PhD and try to do it at a Scottish University, because Scottish Independence is all but guaranteed.

My future just got pissed away on a racist protest vote and I'll never be able to look at my grandparents without wondering if it's on them.

This is not a good day. Not at all. God, everything just seems so bleak now.

I really hope the Two Monks land on their feet after The Toast closes. Maybe a sitcom on CBS? Two Broke Monks. How I Invented Your Mother. Two and a Half Monks. Everybody Loves Monks.

Seriously though, this was my favourite series on The Toast. Thanks so much Mallory, you're amazing.
