YAAAAAAAAS so much of my own life reflected here. Though I was able to get taken seriously much quicker than it sounds like you were (thanks, male privilege? you're still garbage though) , I still flew under the radar until my late twenties because I only had ADD; without that telltale "H" annoying my teachers and parents, I was able to fail my way through dozens of college courses for no reason and spend months and even years un/underemployed before I had a counselor that put the idea into my head.

The experience you describe of forgiving yourself for a lifetime of what you had always been told was lazyness or just being an unreliable person is completely spot on, and just as life changing as you write. I'm so glad that you were able to persevere and get diagnosed. The more visibility for women and girls with ADHD the better; it's truly troubling that anyone would go through life without knowing why their brain works the way it does, and especially so when it's for such a terrible reason as our culture's bullshit gender roles and expectations.

Love this SO SO MUCH. I am in tears for real over here.

my own g-ma once referred to a close friend as an "old battle-axe." (in her eulogy, sadly) I'd never heard the term, and I asked about it afterwards: "A battle-axe is what they used to call women who wouldn't take shit from nobody. Well, I like it. All my favorite people are battle axes."

Your grandma sounds like a real Battle-Axe - thanks for sharing a little bit her light with us.

yeah, I thought they did a really good job with this piece - it wan't explicitly one sided, but they did take time to subtly indicate that one "side" of the issue is made-up fear mongering, using actual stats.

Personally I'd appreciate it if the toast changed the link description to "the highs and fearful, completely anecdotal lows that the data show are actually unrelated to California's prison reform"

I will never ever hate you for this, and I couldn't agree more with his inclusion on this list. Gaius Balthar is every human ever born, distilled down to their essence.

The poor commenter! my first reaction was, did anyone e-mail him? explain what satire is? I bet he could have gotten it with a little help! :D

or like, as a prank maybe? like, "Oh yeah, americans totally don't say muggle, they say, uh," *snickers to self* "no-maj. yeah. definitely no-maj. you should tell people that. because it's definitely true." *stuggles to keep a straight face*

I agree with you there. i also feel like it's a little clunky and inelegant - perfect for America. i can only assume that by the 1920's "wands" would "zap sticks" or some shit :D

totally, utterly non-superstitious, a disbeliever, and a skeptic here, and I always, always read the DMT horoscopes. Cal Garrison is a fantastic writer, regardless of whether you believe she's making it up or interpereting the stars :D
