Thank you for sharing this powerfully articulate piece; I'd like to think there's a hope to imagine a different conclusion where perhaps there is a middle ground to actually discuss these careless microaggressions WHEN they happen, but as you detail the very tense silence of digesting the situation, the prospect looks bleak. I think this goes beyond white privilege into the more general territory of group mentality: wouldn't the flip side, where in a group full of Asians where one Asian member has a white partner suddenly finds themselves having to field all sorts of casually racist things about "selling out" and "dating white," have some similar tensions? Of course the racial power dynamics are starkly different, but the "mark of difference" as you say is almost always stated. I know in my group of Asian family and friends, the "difference" is practically ingrained the normal conversation. One especially stark tactic is when I hear my Chinese friends switch to speaking Chinese in a "side conversation" in the presence of someone who doesn't speak it, just to slip in some comments they know the "different one" won't understand.
