What Is False Imprisonment:

In most states, false imprisonment is defined as the confinement of a person without legal authority or the person's consent. Generally, false imprisonment is accomplished by force or threat of force, and any consent obtained by coercion or threat is not considered valid. False imprisonment is often a misdemeanor and may also be the basis for a civil suit for damages.

If someone wrongfully prevents someone else from leaving a room, a vehicle, or a building when that person wants to leave, this is false imprisonment. This can apply to family members if the person desiring to leave is an adult. Years ago when "deprogramming" was in style, several parents and family members were prosecuted for false imprisonment for confining adult children. Spouses have no legal right to confine each other either.

I do confront them. I'm also prepared for what could happen afterwards, both physically and mentally. There are some crazy, rude, obnoxious people in this world and the majority of them seem to ride the Metro when I'm on it. But the way that they are able to keep operating in this state of unacceptable behavior is because no one ever calls them on it. It's very easy to shoot your mouth off to the one person who has the temerity to call you out on your behavior while the rest of the car stands there in silence while nervously looking at their shoes. It's another thing (and I've seen it before) when an entire car stands up in indignation and calls the person out for what they're doing. I'm not as moral crusader or anything, but Andrew Jackson once said, "One man with courage makes a majority." So yeah, I'm prepared for either a verbal or physical throwdown every time I confront someone on the Metro. But maybe one day, in my pie in the sky world, others will decide that the best way to improve civil behavior on the Metro is not to complain about what happened to them in a video on YouTube after an incident has already happened, but to stiffen their spine, stand up, and say what's right when a person is doing something we all know to be wrong.

I commend Michelle for doing exactly that.

Since we've got some time, how 'bout a post requesting (serious) questions that should be asked of Metro officials by the subcommttee members regarding Metro Security (or lack thereof), then submitting the best 5-10 to the members on the subcommittee?

I know it sounds crazy, but....IT JUST MIGHT WORK!

It's not a perfect storm if it is perpetually occurring. That's called a systematic failure.

Well, thanks for at least trying to do the right thing.

I'd like to think that in a similar situation I'd have done the same thing, with no doubt similar results...

In the defense of Metro, if you had to put up with tens of thousands of riders each day, any one of whom could potentially be holding up an entire train because of their desire to cram one more person on board an already overstuffed car, you'd be a little jaded about somebody calling you up on the intercom and telling you what to do, too. That being said, Metro is inherently an unsafe form of transportation. Most veteran riders recognize this. We also realize that management and the drivers really don't give a rat's hindquarters about the passengers. You take your life (and property) in your own hands when you go through the turnstile. But hyperventillating and implying that Metro wants to kill our children is a bit overboard.

The driver wasn't reported for being rude, Sizzle. He was reported for suspicion of driving while impaired.
