Sounds like you are on the right track, Carol. I'm writing my first novel from the perspective of a male MC. I observe and listen to men who are around his age, research various issues he is dealing with, talk with real men (not just my mc. LOL.) and plan to ask several men I know to read the novel as soon as it's complete. You might also try a local library, or a non-local library to get copies of a paper from the time period. We live near Nashville. The Nashville Public Library has a room dedicated to books, etc. from the 50s and 60s Civil Rights era. Just not sure if you'd have access from anywhere in the world. Perhaps you have a library or a museum in your area that might be dedicated to that time period. Also, if you can get ahold of old copies/re-runs of Any Day Now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Any_Day_Now_(TV_seri... you may get a great idea of what life was like for a tween/teen black girl growing up in the South. Hope it helps. Good luck and happy writing!
