I hate it. Hate it. Hate it.
I'm Irish and "Mam" is my mother. Every time I hear it I think "I am not your mother!"

I saw a book the other day called "The Gas We Pass" and fell in love with it. It's really rather educational. There's a half a cup of gas in a normal fart you know. Mind boggling.
Sadly the Turtle is too young for that book yet. But your boys are the right age I'd say.

The Turtle is still a bit young, at 2, but when we are somewhere safe (like the local Mission) I left him wander off, so long as I can see him. And I still worry about him (what with the rattle snakes and mountain lions and whatnot!) But I can see that with the type of life we lead he will need the confidence to do things on his own. He has confidence now. Helicoptering around him will hinder him. And make him nervous. Where we live now would be ideal for some free range parenting, but apparently the people here don't like to see kids wandering around on their own and have been known to complain about kids riding their bikes around the neighbourhood :s Lord knows where we'll be by the time the Turtle is old enough to be out by himself , but hopefully I'll be strong enough to let him off by himself! Hopefully!

Another book addict here. And I love Ladybird books. The story ones, anyway.
I find that over here most kids books are some kind of movie/tv tie in, rather than stories for their own sake (which is what I love). Thank God for internet shopping.

Living in the U.S., I find it odd that there are outlets in the bathroom. I live in constant fear of being electrocuted, which is why there are no outlets in the bathrooms, light switches either, usually.
It's the little things that are odd, isn't it?

I'm totally with you. Play is how they/we learn. And too often it is dismissed.
I just ordered "Playful Parenting" and I'm interested to read it, if only because it will (hopefully) justify my tomfoolery at the park :)

I'm in California now and miss Florida. When I was in Florida I missed Ireland. When I was in Ireland I missed Japan. When I was in Japan I missed Ireland.
Usually I miss Ireland. Family, friends, in-jokes, and knowing what people are saying are severely underrated.
That said, I'd give my left leg for for a source of bread without high fructose corn syrup in it. Indeed bread without any sweeteners in it at all, please. That's my dream. It's a bit sad. And perhaps time to but a bread maker. But would I use it?
It's harder being someplace familiar than somewhere completely different. When you expect things to be one way and they're different it's harder than finding the unexpected. And can be maddening.

Great idea! I'll store it for later use.
(I tried to upload a link, but it seems not to have worked. And when I tried again it said I had already done it :( Confused!)

It does make you feel more organized, doesn't it?
