Hi Emily! You should check out the speech by Douglas Adams on "the Artificial God"; it touches on a lot of the same points you mention here and I think you would really like it: http://www.biota.org/people/douglasadams/

"Was I grateful to have once endured the vicissitudes of puberty? Maybe not. But for the first time, on a bone-deep level, I saw the point of it."

Holy shit, a thousand times this. Becoming a mother was the first gendered experience of my life with which I felt a genuine, solid connection and resonance. Everything else has felt like something that kind of happened around me, with me participating exactly enough to go about my business unbothered; I've often thought that, had I been born reproductively male, I would have felt exactly as indifferent about growing up a man. Not so for motherhood; I'm all in on that role in a way that is unprecedented for me.

Actually, the plastic kind at least is pretty easy to remove. There are little plastic filaments trailing from the end and through the cervix; the removal process involves getting a very firm grip on these filaments and pulling steadily. I have watched ER doctors whip them out in seconds with the advantage of being able to see what they are doing.

Spend more than $40 on a running bra at a running store. Serious chests need serious containment; there's no real way around it. The Running Room goes well above 38C. I have this one bra from there, I don't know the brand because all the logos and such have been removed or rubbed off. It's got a racer back AND a hook-and-eye closure, wide shoulder straps that secure with velcro, and a foam-reinforced front. I can HOP on STAIRS wearing this mighty piece of equipment without significant jiggling.

I know there's a lot of gross gender pageantry around bras, and high-quality ones are expensive investments, but they will last for ages and ages if treated with care, and the payoff in comfort is priceless.

Oh man, Ian Malcolm was the very first character ever to give me Pants Feelings. The smart and the sassy, and the dark hair and eyes, and the way of being skinny yet also with muscles, AND being in distress and in need of rescue and medical care . . . Wow. My sexuality hasn't really changed a bit in the last two decades has it?

All raw meat surfaces are contaminated. A slab of steak can have its surfaces cauterized, but ground meat is ALL SURFACE. There's no way around it, and pretending there is is one of the reasons Americans have so much diarrhea.

Meanwhile, with my small mouth and large teeth, I have endured a grand total, combining baby and adult teeth, of SIXTEEN extractions. The final four were under sedation, and the experience was infinitely preferable to the horror and pain of those stupid huge Novocaine needles. Were I still religious, I would be praying fervently for my daughter to have her father's obnoxiously-good dentition.
