This is so amazing. I was at Haw Par Villa as a nine year old, visiting Singapore from Australia. I think at the time I didn't think it was strange to ride a boat through a dragon and look at gruesome and specific depictions of hellish torments - I just thought it was a cultural thing that they have at theme parks in Singapore. But I've thought about it a lot since. So strange and haunting. Thanks for writing about it so beautifully!

I'm pretty good at reading these without getting too anxious - they are just ridiculous and funny. But the 15K line floored me. Like I felt my stomach drop. $15K??? At least people LIKE weddings. NO ONE EVEN LIKES BABY SHOWERS!! Whyyyyy

My dad is engaged in a decade-long battle with squirrels in the backyard. They keep eating from the birdfeeder and he keeps trying to outwit them. It has involved videotaping the squirrels, building elaborate tunnel-and-pole contraptions, and LOTS of window-staring, muttering, and graph paper machinations.
