I don't spend enough time with my daughter. I rarely cook nutritious meals from scratch. I probably spend too much time at my computer so Flea will say things like, "Mummy, can I please ask something, after you've done your work, can we just have a 5 minute game of Monopoly?" and I feel like the worst parent EVER. Or we'll go on holiday and we'll be having a great time until I see one of those two-parent families and I'm instantly reminded that because of my choices, my child doesn't have that, and the doubt and worry goes on and on and we give ourselves such a hard time, don't we?

Your memory is seeing a powerful woman on TV. Mine is seeing a gentle, vulnerable, frightened man called Bernard.
Bernard had learning disabilities and lived in a local authority home my Mum managed. As part of the Thatcher government's attempts to "modernise" social care, the home was closed and people like Bernard were thrust into "care in the community" which meant living in a former council house and being visited a few times a month by an overloaded community care worker.
Six months down the line Bernard had lost his house. He simply wasn't equipped to cook, care for himself or manage a household. My Mum and I were out shopping when we saw him. He was living rough in the bus station. Soon after, he died.
When judging people, I tell my child to look at their heart, not their gender. Of course, you can argue Thatcher was a powerful woman. But being powerful doesn't make someone worthy of my respect. Someone who cares for, supports and helps the most vulnerable members of our community to live in safety, and with dignity - that's worthy of respect. Whether Thatcher was male, or female, I'm afraid she could never be any kind of role model to me.
