*applause* People talk about baby boomers and their children, but my mother was a product of the Silent Generation (a pre-boomer). Her expectations for behavior and manners were different than my friends' parents', including this idea of charm. She modeled her behavior after the Grace Kelly standard and expected me to do so as well. I used to watch my friends and their give-no-fucks attitudes and felt so detached that it was almost as though they were from a different world. Thank you for this, for putting it into words.

I had forgotten about Jimmy, but I did remember that Thomas was sleeping with the Duke early Season 1. Apparently, I've forgotten a lot of the earlier seasons, looking at that summary. Thanks for posting the link. My thought was that they were willing to ignore it as long as it wasn't made public. Interesting that that hasn't been brought up again, although Thomas always seems to be on the verge of being fired.

Interestingly, this week was also the time when 'Grantchester' (which airs after 'Downton') took up the same issue. Slightly different time period -- 'Grantchester' is in the early 1950s -- but their treatment seemed far more realistic than 'Downton'.

I do wonder what the reactions "upstairs" -- or even some of the "downstairs" characters like Mr. Carson -- would have been. They picked two of the most sympathetic and discreet characters to learn Thomas' secret. I can't help but speculate on whether there will be any residual fallout if anyone else learns about it. Perhaps this is the first domino. Note: I'm not disagreeing with the article, but since this is not the first time Thomas has struggled, the reveal could have more consequences later. Others may have jumped ahead in the season and not if this does or doesn't happen, but I am happily unspoiled at this point.

This is what I was going to mention.

Backstory -- I have IBD and poor nutritional absorption. In June 2013, I had a flare up and my hair started falling out. This has happened before and loading up on zinc sulfate usually stopped it. Several doctors later and no one has figured out why it's falling out, despite multiple tests for deficiencies and thyroid. In October I started massively loading up on vitamins and mineral, in the hopes that one of them would help. It has helped that problem a little, but an unintended consequence was that my SAD has almost disappeared. January is hell on earth for me, but this year has been fine. No tears, no fetal position, nothing.

TL;DR -- I bulked up on vitamins for an unrelated condition and my SAD has mostly disappeared. I've been using a Vitamin D spray to avoid the non-absorption problem.

This is my concern as well. I love the idea and absolutely support the principles behind it, but I'd like to know how it's going to affect faculty salaries. As an adjunct, my pay comes out to about $10 per student per month. I really can't afford to take a pay hit. I can't live on what I make as it is. If we're going to revamp the system to make education accessible, then we need to address other problems that are directly tied to it. Otherwise, adjunct/part-time faculty (who usually have no benefits or ability to unionize) are going to be vulnerable.
