Great write-up, Sarah. I had a hard time not summarizing (and it was a wordy summary, pre-edit) because her diverse experiences are so unlike my own that I found them all memorable. While I'm not sure I came to like her with great affection, I think it's telling that we've all had a response to the book.

I was also challenged not to peek at other peoples' reviews!

(Oops, I forgot to comment! Sorry!)

I TOTALLY agree about the maps! That was definitely a thought running through my mind as well. The Gandhi snippet was also interesting, and I liked the Tabasco story, too. But yes, long and dry overall.

To clarify, I think the reason "The Nasty Bits" bothered me was the abrasive content of the book -- the nasty bits of his jobs. I agree with you that he is a compelling writer, so it was the content that I think bothered me. That's why I'm curious as to if I would like "Medium Raw" better.

Maybe they think he isn't as well known abroad and didn't want to change his look in that market? I wonder.

Great write up! I read his book "The Nasty Bits" and found it too abrasive, so having read yours and the other Kitchen Reader members' reviews, I'm tempted to give him another shot.

That's interesting that the cover is so different on your copy versus the US version. Did you read the article Aileen linked to? He said his publisher wasn't happy with the US cover of him in a suit so it sounded like his choice. Hmm.
