But let's back up. What about threats of punishment, wrath, and violence here on this earth? If we offend this God, our God, does not the threat of divine retribution hang over our heads? Again, I ask, is God a god of wrath and vengeance? Is our first instinct to point to the various Bible verses that confirm this sentiment? Is our first reaction to find these verses and argue some sort of positive justification that our God is wrathful and vengeful?

Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that “violence begets violence,” echoing the words of Christ in Matthew 26:52 that “those who live by the sword will die by the sword.”

Or, as Shakespeare so eloquently opined in Romeo and Juliet (and the HBO show Westworld has re-popularized), “these violent delights have violent ends.”

As Michael Cheshire writes in Why We Eat Our Own, "Hey, I got bad news, my fellow Christians, pastors everywhere sin because we do get away with it. Some of us are just way better at hiding it."* Now, I'm not trying to excuse any behavior here, or even really condemn it. I just think if we work harder to understand our human failings, a lot of church drama can be mitigated.

I cannot understand this line: See, that "again" right there is the kicker. If we believe that it already happened once, why should we automatically shoot down the notion that it might happen again?

Mark Millar, author of Chosen, Wanted, Ultimates, and the new Secret Service, approves of my skills with the ladies. Girls like it when you talk to them about comics, right? Good, because that's the narrative I'm choosing to believe.

On a theological bent, this would lead us into the constant discussion about predestination and free will. If God knows all future events, how can we have free will? And if we don't have free will, well, what's the point? Are we anything more than just mere puppets? You cannot escape your destiny.

I am sadly not a very big fan of her in Turn Left, which is I guess sadly why I'm not a huge fan of the episode. She's so different from the Rose that I love that I almost see her as someone else. She also looks so flipping different, gawd.

All of which, in turn, makes claims about Sydney’s empathy feel very ironic, to me. Sydney was a loyal agent of SD-6 for seven years. This does not seem to a factor in her thinking, at all. What’s more, a huge reason why she gets to have the moral high ground vis-à-vis Irina is because the series, against all logic, has consistently portrayed that time with SD-6 as a victimless crime, while far more loose-lipped about the harm caused by Irina’s actions. Take away Sydney’s stacked deck (assisted by the fact that Sydney’s guilt is far more visible than Irina’s, regardless of its actual substance) and things look rather different, and the fact that Sydney has not, despite her supposed empathy, noticed this at all makes her look, at best, inconsistent.
