Every time we went hiking, my ex would send the dog off with "Sawyer pathfinder puppy dun dun dunnnn" to the tune of the ESPN news noise/song.

It was hilarious and I loved it.

Technically not literature but there is this beautiful song called "Mi Unicornio Azul" which is widely regarded in Latin America as being as song about the end of childhood and all those feels.

A close family friend once passionately argued that it was definitely about the loss of the narrator's favorite pair of blue jeans. She was not kidding. The look of horror/utter delight on my father's face will stay with me forever.

Look I tried being understanding. Immigrant parents sometimes have different cultural expectations about when and how you leave the parental home. In Colombia it's normal to live with the 'rents until you get married (and sometimes even after you you do). My parents really thought that's what I'd do. And it's not like my millenial self didn't have to come home all humbled and broke and then a second time to finish saving up for a small down payment.

But... I would have NEVER brought strange home to my parents house. I'm horrified. He can't even find a way to pay a few of their bills before they find out? UGH. BAN MEN. OVER IT.

Oh man you're behind the spaghetti dinner tinyletter? I have no idea how and where I signed up for it but I've been loving it in my inbox. I was inspired to make a spinach pesto from something I read a few weeks back. I look forward to continuing to expand my kitchen skills and I have you and your contributors to thank!

Cocktails and hugs.

I think some irrational feelings are normal in these siutations. It sounds almost cliche but it really helped when i was told and/or read "grief is not a straight line". And I think it's okay to have days that are extra hard and make you feel like you're taking steps back in recovering (even if you really, really aren't).

So I hope today goes as okay as it can for you. I hope you have a wonderful anniversary where you guys can talk about the best and maybe not-so best times. Enjoy those cocktails.

I think the champagne idea is awesome!

At my first corporate job, the VP who had hired me was an amazing woman/mentor figure and left about a year after I was hired. She'd always seemed charmed the little Bilbo Baggins Funko Pop figure I had at my desk so when she was leaving I bought one for her and wrote a quick note about how much I appreciated her and how I hoped her new job would be a grand adventure. She seemed sincerely touched when she saw the gift.

So I think champagne and note of similar sentiment make a great parting gift.

I bought a California King bed without realizing how expensive the frame/sheets/everything it was going to be be so please let me share my wisdom.

If you're going to to invest big bucks, I'd put that money into a decent frame. I spent around $180 on a frame that I immediately hated and ended up gifting to my parents. If I waited and not done panic-shopping, I would have had the money put aside when I found the frame I really liked. Check places like Wayfair. Some of the stuff isn't great but some of it is and is decently priced (they buy from some of the same suppliers my company gets stuff from, the Alpine furniture brands is one of my favorites and is what my headboard is).

For sheets, the sale section of Macys became my favorite hangout. The Martha Stewart brand has served me well when I can find it and snatch it up. They are always running specials so ask the people at the counter if they have any coupons you could use. If you stick to a King bed, you'll get lots of great deals. Also check out Marshal's but I'm a little more careful about the brands i buy there, I try to stick with the classics- DKNY, Ralph Lauren, etc.

Hope this provides some help! Yes it is annoying to have to pay extra compared to my old queen bed but man, now the dog and I can stretch out and sleep in peace!

One of the guys my dad went to seminary went tried faith healing my eyes when I was maybe 12 or so. I should point out that there's nothing terribly wrong with my eyes. I use glasses, always have, and have a decently strong prescription.

I just remember thinking that I liked wearing my glasses while they prayed and my dad looked super uncomfortable. We've never talked about that incident to this day. Maybe I'll force an awkward phone call later!
