Candy was brutal, yeah. I had some Nerds at a friend's house in the last couple weeks, and still remember the extreme, EXTREME guilt.

Best Lent ever, I gave up swearing and about three weeks in threw down a "FUCK THIS" and gave up entirely.

I gave up LiveJournal once (2004, I'm pretty sure) and people reallllly noticed. Because I was head-and-shoulders the most prolific LJer most of my flist knew.

Why would I even expect to see my whole, exact self on TV?

I think everyone goes through those moments where you realize you are not like anybody else. None of us are. There are just some life experiences that make you realize it faster.

...truest thing EVER. Thank you so much for this essay/ramble.

I was so waiting for someone to mention that book in these comments. Me too.

I still can't braid other people's hair though. And I think fishtail braids are ugly.

Yes, yes, yes. So distracting, trying to figure out who that guy was and where I knew him from took me out of the movie HARD the first time I watched it. If Greg Grunberg had to be in the damn movie he should have been in a full-body costume.

My daughter's daycare teacher calls them "buddy" sometimes and the other day my daughter "buddy"d me but (presumably inadvertently) used really hilarious, sarcastic intonation. Nothing like being told "Thank you, BUDDY" when you hand a 2-year-old her bowl of peas.

It's my impression that at a national level the motivation was largely racism but that at a local level there were plenty of politically connected people who did not mind at ALL that they could buy the land off their neighbors of Japanese descent for pennies on the dollar and were all in favor of the camps for that reason. It was hugely motivating for some people in terms of making sure enforcement was very prompt and very thorough.

My grandparents' family farmed their neighbors' land while they were in the camps and returned the land to them once they got out. But they absolutely believed at the time that internment was the right thing to do, for entirely racist reasons.
