I am super blessed to be married to a farmer and to live on a nice piece of land. I raise a huge garden every summer and preserve EVERYTHING (it will last us up until about 1 or 2 months before the next harvest). We have been milking goats until this summer when we got our first milk cow! My husband raises cattle for beef for us to eat as well as hunts wild game. I make everything from scratch, including all of my cleaning products and a lot of self-care products. I spend most of my day in the kitchen! Even with doing all this I still feel like there could be more that I can do - either to be more efficient (save on time) or be more frugal (save on money).
Redheadednurse, I see you mentioned The Breast Book below. Do you have any other resources form a Christian perspective about BRCA genes? I am 26 and was tested positive for BRCA 1 a couple years ago when my sister was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at age 31. It was devastating to see her go through the chemo and radiation that she had to with 2 young children. I have seen all of the statistics you've mentioned and, frankly, it's terrifying. I have had more than one recommendation of prophylactic mastectomy (some say by age 30, others say age 35) and my husband and I are really struggling with this decision. My mom is about to start chemo for stage 3 breast cancer - 2 of her sisters recently when through the process - and one of her sisters went through it all with ovarian cancer when she was in her 20s.
I constantly go back and forth between taking advantage of modern-day technology that can very possibly let me live long enough to raise a family (if not biologically, through adoption) and feeling like I'm not trusting God if I go through with these procedures. So I guess I'm just looking for some good Christian medical guidance here. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Amen! Thank you for the posts you write and the message you spread to women. I am a young woman, married for 2 years, and I have a degree. And I love finding new ways to put my education to use in my own home (rather than in the work force)! I feel completely prepared to raise children without the steady flow of 2 incomes and I'm proud that I am learning how to be a stay-at-home mom before I'm a mom. People who surround me often think I'm crazy, but your blog is always encouraging!
