I agree that the pacing is slower/deliberate, and I definitely didn't feel "close" to any of the characters while reading THE DANISH GIRL. I wonder if Ebershoff created this distance to make the story more palatable to a wider audience (rather than make an emotional connection). I'm still mulling it over, haven't written my review yet, but, yes, a very interesting story/history.

An excellent (clear, well-written) review, Amy! I appreciate how you connected more with some characters than others. LET THE GREAT WORLD SPIN took a while to hook me, but I'm glad I stuck with it -- your review has captured the reason it worked.

This is the first McCann book I've read -- have you read others?

At our age (I'm a year younger), I've become so irregular that I'm like a 12-year-old every month: "Huh? I wasn't expecting that!"

No longer using the menstrual cycle to predict ovulation, or to mark the possibility of a pregnancy (or not), I'm ready to be done with having my period.

Well, I say that, but I'm not sure I'd rather have the possible side effects of menopause

You have a way of sparking conversation, Amy!

I don't know much about the Christian fiction market. Like Florinda, I enjoy a book that incorporates discussion of faith - questions and conversation, not an agenda-driven plot.

I do know that I would avoid the book with the vapid smiling cover model; the previous version is much more appealing, and does speak to a historical fiction bent.

LOL at your plea for publishers to 'cast their nets' a little wider :)

I've never watched this show, but your comments on this episode make me think I'd like it (my parents watch it, and mom has said I'd enjoy it ... she's always right!).

LOL about House hiding behind another dust jacket :)

LOL! I'm with Margot - I hadn't thought of this as a foodie film, but, of course it is!____
Ratatouille (the film) is a favorite around here, and one of the few movies that all kids can agree on when we placate them with a movie in the car for those 4-hour drives to J's family.____
Thanks for the 'dinner and a movie' pairing suggestion :)
