I always complain about how hard it is to navigate EEBO/how bad the metadata is... but secretly I love it because it gives me an excuse to read ALL OF THE PAMPHLETS.

"your search produced no results" lol I guess I'm gonna have to browse alphabetically, what a shame.

My thesis was on women in late medieval/early modern lit, so my process was:
1. Read the toast dot net.
2. Read the Toast comments.
3. Troll through Early English Books online. Definitely research.*
4. Refresh the toast.
5. Oh hey look, another thing on medieval manuscripts and/or women! This totally counts towards my thesis!†

I think it is a testament to the creepiness of this dude that even David Futrelle's commentary could not get me past that line. However, the rest of it was ace and in true we-hunted-the-mammoth form.

"Apparently they smell like butter which is the smell I notice when I’m in any place where I notice girls walking around in their mid to late teenage years."

Get him away from girls in their "mid to late teenage years" please???

I was just about to write a comment saying exactly this! Hills like White Elephants made me feel really dumb during my first-ever undergraduate English course (but then I went on to get a Master's in English so SUCK IT ERNEST).

also I will be the first to admit that my dislike of Hemingway stems from the shame surrounding that particular incident.

I read this on my phone at first, so all the characters except the "h" and the "r" came out as boxes, which made it approximately 500000% more horrifying.

Leaving academia is hard in its own right! People are all judge-y about anyone who doesn't follow the typical ma-phd-tenure-track-job path, and that sucks. I should have also probably added that I'm an aspiring medievalist, but if you can't tell, I'm really not into arbitrary gatekeeping (in historical periods and weird-academic-classifications, among other things).

If you geek out about medieval stuff on the Toast, you are a medievalist in my book!

Hi fellow medievalist!! These comments also give me hives. Every time I see the "THIS IS RENAISSANCE NOT MEDIEVAL" debate I feel viscerally angry (my research is on latelatelate medieval to earlyearlyearly modern literature, so I'm sensitive about people being jerks about periodization). Also, I'm 90% sure that everyone who starts those debates took, like, the intro-to-early-music-seminar in undergrad, and now they're like "YES I KNOW ALL OF THE THINGS PLEASE LET ME EXPLAIN WHY LANDINI WAS INCONTROVERTIBLY A RENAISSANCE COMPOSER"

It was a hard path we took as medievalists, but I think it was worth it??
