Two things: I want to clarify that my feelings the other morning were in response to my son clinging and weeping upon drop-off at pre-school, and my pile of dung was a dung pile of guilt and missing him, as I always miss him the most when drop-off is sad. That said, yeah, the boy is often frustrating as all get-up. And I have on occasion internetted things I probably shouldn't have, for his sake. Also: my wife has a journal kept by her mother during my wife's first year of life. I think it was invaluable to her during our son's first year.

Of course, yes, I wish I could just call my dad and ask him about these things, and I would kill to know his thoughts as they happened back in the mid 1970s.
