Just saw it, and I'm dying to add The Portrait of a Lady to the list of reference/sources. Dr. Alan McMichael seemed to me to be cribbed directly from Caspar Goodwood, and there are similarities between the Edith-Thomas-Lucille triad and the Isabel-Osmond-Madame Merle one. Like Edith, Isabel's inheritance is what makes her such an attractive mark for the grifters.

I'm also a PhD dropout and a librarian. My experience and the master's I earned in that program allowed me to move into a professional academic librarian position while still working on the master's in library science. No regrets.
