I haven't read most of the original books but I love how the parallels to horrific things in real life are always there without being heavy-handed in these things. Also love the use of puddled as a verb.

The Guardian article mentioned there are wives and girlfriends among them doing all the cooking. Shame they didn't include an interview with one of them because I'm fascinated as to what the fuck they're thinking. I feel a bit sorry for them, but they probably fully support the occupation, so not that sorry.

I was at a carol service last night where they'd changed 'Good Christian men, rejoice' to 'Good Christians all, rejoice', and it was quite funny listening to which elderly Anglicans in the congregation insisted on singing the old version.

Mallory is crushing it on Dear Prudence today (I particularly liked the answer to the woman who wants to get the 10-year-old's moustache waxed.)

The story about the Scrabble game reminds me of how I found out what oral sex was - I was 13 and had just started reading the newspapers and I found an article by a journalist telling the story of how her son had been accused of raping a classmate and obviously this girl was a lying slut. Of the many things I didn't understand about it, I decided to ask my mother what oral sex was (I was a very naive, undiagnosed autistic 13-year-old with no friends I could ask, and she'd told me to always come to her with questions about sex.) She flipped out and refused to tell me, so I looked up 'oral' in the dictionary, read 'of or to do with the spoken word' and for years had a mental definition of oral sex as basically talking dirty (again, autism brain). I guess it's too late for the letter writer to resort to such strategies, though.

Also, I love how Barack Obama is taking advantage of his last year as president to meet all his heroes and just fanboy out. So far we've had David Attenborough, Marilynne Robinson and Bear Grylls.

Oooh, thought of another one - the entire cast of Archer. However insanely self-absorbed/ destructively impulsive/ outright psycopathic in the case of Cheryl/ Carol they are, I think they're all adorable and flawless.

Scar! Although I'm not sure if it's 'identified with' or 'Jeremy Irons as a lion caused my sexual awakening at the age of four.' But he's so much more fun than Mufasa, who's a massively smug hypocrite (seriously, that 'When we die, our bodies become grass, and the antelope eat the grass' line reminds me of anyone who's ever tried to justify their massive privilege by arguing 'It's just the way the world is! Bla bla trickle down economics') And it's not his fault a natural drought hit the pride lands during his rule! He's being unfairly blamed for historic events!
