It sounds like the author was trying to build up tension by the woman attempting to adjust in the rented room and the blistering heat, but shame about the book jacket info. I suppose if you're expecting something the tension can bleed out a little, but that shouldn't be a problem if the fundamental reading experience is great, if the writing is thoughtful.

I read a book by Marr years ago (I forgot the title, it wasn't my kind of thing) but the premise of this one sounds interesting. The burden of foresight, of sensing deaths before they happen gives the story its dramatic element and implications of messing with the future through the present are always fascinating.
