Your opening paragraph gives me a warm smile, as it is part of my pre-most-wonderful-time-of-the-year as well. There is something magical to me about the flipping of the calendar, even figuratively, from August 31st to September 1st. Irregardless of the temps, Autumn enters my soul at that point and I welcome her in with great joy.

Thank you for taking part in RIP. I hope you enjoy everything you read and watch.

Welcome back once again! Crazy that we've been on this adventure for this long. Happy to have you along with us again.

Haven't tried Stranger Things yet, but it certainly seems everyone is watching it and this will be the perfect time of year.

I hope everything you read and watch is wonderfully perilous.

I should probably try to get to Hollow City as well. I have had the book ever since seeing Ransom Riggs at a writing event during the first week of the book's release. And I've heard good things.

Wonderful to have you with us again this year. You've been doing it since year three, eh? Seems like both a long time and a blink of the eye. Time is odd.

My wife is in line for the Penny audio as well. She's listened to most of them on audio and I've read all of them in book form (and listened to some of the audio with her...very good narrator). I'm almost done with Long Way Home and am enjoying it.

Did you listen to the interview with the reader on the last novel, where he shared that he doesn't read ahead, his recorded narration is his first time through the book, so he experiences it fresh. Very cool.

Saw this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I didn't have the highest expectations. I was not a fan of the previous film. It felt like another unnecessary origin story to me. Loved the cast, just felt like the story was very weak. This one was much more enjoyable. I liked the way it served as a way to bring things full circle, leaving the franchise in a good place to go any direction.

Glad you enjoyed it as a follow up to the first one even if parts of it were not quite as enjoyable. And always nice to read a book that helps you knock out more than one challenge goal! :)

I have GOT to get around to trying out Kate Morton's work at some point.

I'll be interested to see what you think of Her Fearful Symmetry.

Thanks for taking part in RIP again this year. Looking forward to it myself maybe more than ever. I'm so in the mood for Autumn.

Those all look like great choices. Crazy to think we are a mere two days away from September. Unbelievable. Even more so when it will be over 100 degrees today. Yuck!

Thanks for joining in again this year!

I just finished this one earlier this week and now need to get around to collecting my thoughts on it. In a nutshell: it was very good! Nice reading your thoughts and seeing your enthusiasm for the book. I felt the same way about it. I've had this on my shelf for far too long and am so glad my recent read of the short story and novella prompted me to finally read this.

If you haven't grabbed The Butcher of Anderson Station you need to. It is about Fred and you will like it very much.

I'm planning on diving in to Caliban's War soon so that I can be ready to read Abaddon's Gate when it comes out in June.

"This is going to be a hard review because this is the type of book where I wanted to slap the crap out of the main character the ENTIRE time and after I finished I was quickly looking up when the next book was coming out"

That is funny, mostly because I've been there. A recent example of a naive character, but not one I necessarily wanted to slap, was Ellie Quin in the The Legend of Ellie Quin. She is very naive, but it fits the character as she grew up in an isolated rural community. And she makes the kind of mistakes that I as a parent cringe at. But I still really enjoyed her because I often felt she was making teenage-like decisions which, while they could be annoying, also made her seem like a real teenager.

I'm interested that despite this big issue you found with the main character that there was so much other goodness there that you are looking forward to the next book. It will be really interesting to see if the author makes different choices with the next book and/or if part of it is just a matter of her craft improving.
