It's a beautiful sad comfort, in these End Days, to see someone delurking because of seeing their love of zebrafish reflected in a link roundup. How have they known the thousand strange facts/enthusiasms of each of us, all this time?

There's a lot of value in saying early on "I think you're neat! This aspect is new for me, and I've been doing some reading and asking around, but please let me know if I say something stupid so that I can apologize right away. So.. what's your favorite cake?"

You want to be clear that you don't expect them to educate you about this, but that you're open to learning. And that you know it's not the only (or even necessarily most important thing) about them. And it's not why you like them!
