Great point! I always end up rewriting my first pages too... but I think you hit on something important--sometimes what's right for a story, may be everything we're told NOT to do. For ex.: my new WIP starts with a prologue. I always here what a no no they are, but it just feels right for this story. (I just hope readers thinks so too!)

Cool! Just entered. Sounds like a fun read. What's going on with your cyberpunk story?? I got to check into your archives and see what your latest is... on submission yet? :D

Hey, Lori! I think your query does a great job of stating the stakes and conflict. I may pare down the first para just a tad. I'm wondering if you even need to mention the part about Piper. I'd try writing it without mentioning her or the creation and see how it reads.

Good luck! :)

Aw, what a nice memory of your dad. Sorry he didn't get to read the last two.. he would've loved it!
I recently read some articles online about the depth and mutable elements on the series. It's really interesting and here's the link: http://www.hpana.com/forums/topic_view.cfm?tid=61...

But honestly, I think these peeps are reading WAY too much into it. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to analyze it, but it couldn't just be JK's writerly subconscious making it all happen instead of this deep inner meaning? I dunno... read it for yourself and see what you think.

Either way, she's a creative genius and such a huge inspiration. And you will love sharing HP with your kids some day. Mine love the films and I can't wait til they're ready to read them! When I was preggo with my first, I was so uncomfortable and HUGE, I laid around a lot. The HP series kept me company and I devoured the series in the last trimester of my misery. lol

I really liked it too! Portman was awesome. I also wondered if it was really her dancing the black swan. I love films like these, and I've been meaning to watch Requiem for so long and STILL haven't done it. I'm putting it on my list right now.
Have you ever read Kristen Lamb's post on Black Swan? It's really good... she relates it to writing. You shoudl check it out!

Beautiful prose, as usual. Your descriptions are always such a pleasure to read. :)
