Humor helps with connection. My historicals can be a little weighty and gritty and suppose, so I do try to make sure to include some humor. It helps readers see my characters as people--I hope. Thank you for these tips, AE! Congrats on your new release!

Yes, I agree. And as an African American author writing African American characters, I have been reprimanded by editors for using more appropriate language to the time. It is a careful balance and something to think about historically--how far can you go before the reader is made uncomfortable and is taken from the story? Thanks for the discussion.
