I agree that obnoxious people are no easier to ignore than screaming children - but the Mullets, front bottoms, and bleach-blonde women with eighties hair you mentioned in your post certainly are.

It's a bit of a stretch to compare meeting market demands with women-only gyms and child-free dining options with mass murder.

I don't think this is a sign that the rights and desires of people without children are valued more than those with them, and I don't consider the offering of child-free options to be discriminatory. I see it as an effort to keep their customers happy (and profit accordingly).

The exclusion of smokers from venues could also be considered discriminatory, yet it's in the best interest of other patrons, so we accept it.

There are plenty of other places to dine with kids, so why not let people have a select few high-end restaurants to sip on their $300 bottle of wine and eat their $30 sliver of cake in peace?

Couples of exclude children from attending their wedding because they don't want disturbance to ruin their special day. I've never had a problem with that either.

I do agree with you that the responsibility lies at the feet of parents. Children simply aren't kept in check the way they used to be. People in general seem to have far less respect and consideration for those around them.

I agree with Rachel (above). Sometimes type B is warranted. Besides, sometimes a little healthy debate can be fun... especially because we bloggers are always absolutely right, right? ;)

Mullets, front bottoms, and bleach-blonde women with eighties hair are easy to ignore. The loud obnoxious 4 year-old that shoots a chopstick into your eye from the next table - not so much.

I fully support bans on young children in *some* restaurants. I like the idea of there being plenty of places I can dine out with my children and a few that I can go to without my kids where I can truly get a quiet break away from other people's kids, as well as my own.

We're fine with women-only gyms that are designed to make women feel more comfortable working out without men present. Why shouldn't restaurant patrons have the option of dining at a restaurant without children present - if that's what makes them feel more comfortable?

Likewise, I can see how business people paying a fortune to travel first class would welcome being able to select a flight with a kid-free first class section for minimal disturbance.

Now that a variety of companies are offering kid-free options, clearly there's a reasonable market for it. They wouldn't be doing it otherwise.
