I've been singing the Toast's praises to anyone who would listen for a long time, but it's only reading all this that I'm truly realizing all of the less tangible but more important things the Toast and all of you have given me.

I think renegadeoboe just said it best, so I'm copying it here: And here's to all of us for managing, somehow, to become simultaneously kinder and more fierce.

I didn't realize this is what the Toast has done for me until now. It's coincided with my late twenties, a time of personal and professional growth and formation. And thanks to this beautiful website and community I've been working on these life projects with a clearer sense of self and purpose and the knowledge that there are people out there who want to make change but understand that it requires careful thought, reflection, and listening to a complex and sometimes contradictory range of voices in order to make that change in a meaningful and positive way.

Also it's a glorious place of refuge and laughter and silliness that has never failed to give me a lift when I needed it.

This made me tear up (I was close before that, but it put me over the edge). It also made me wonder where my copy of the Times from the next morning is, because I *know* I didn't throw it out but I haven't seen it in a while.

The jerk I was dating back then was a jerk, but he did get up super early to snag a paper from the dorms for me, and for that I will always be thankful.

I admit to not having paid much attention to the particulars of this (I'm overwhelmed enough by our politics here), but now that I'm reading about it, it does seem to have a lot of parallels to what's going on here.

Occasionally? I live in Boston and so it definitely comes up around big events (especially the marathon), which these days have tons of security (which to me seems futile - can you really lock down 26 miles of city street?). It happens more when there are killings around the country, and less when things are quiet. But it's definitely a thought that crosses my mind now and again, sometimes seemingly completely unprompted.
