This is awesome! Best...movie...ever :-D Love the analysis. Maybe I'll dig that first novel out of the drawer and see if it's slightly alive.

I've never seen Melinda, Melinda....can you believe that?

I skipped straight to the next scene, which is her in a hallway eavesdropping on a conversation. It's the start of her journey, so it seemed a better place to begin. The dream comes into play later in the story, within context (a conversation about memories she has that are relevant to the storyline).

That said, it was my first novel and I've decided to scrap the whole thing and start over lol. It wasn't just the dream that wasn't working, it was...everything. I'm pretty sure I made every single mistake you could possibly make in constructing a plot and characters. Glad nobody has read it but me ;-)

I started my first novel with a dream. Then I read that agents hate them lol. And while the dream was completely relevant to the rest of the story, in the end I figured out it didn't add anything to the story. I kept it in a file where I can look at it fondly...but nobody else sees it lol

I don't have kids, but I completely agree. I think it's as ridiculous to deny children the right to know they are a female or male and to know what that means. It's also ridiculous to pretend it doesn't matter, both in society and within ourselves. Seems like a fundamental, and healthy, thing to know. And if that means a girl wants to play with pink legos, why should Lego not make some? Does't mean THEY have to buy them. Me? I'd have been all over it!
